The synagogue was founded in 1638 by a banker, Isaac Jakubowicz. It was renovated several times in the 19th century and completely restored after being damaged during World War II. The stone Aron Hakodesh with Tuscany columns and fragments of paintings have been preserved. In addition, the interior of the baroque synagogue hosts the permanent photography exhibition: In Memory of Polish Jews.
