In 1994, a modest festival of student etudes appeared on the map of our city’s cultural events. Its main aim was to promote the œuvre of students at film and art schools from all over the world. In 2005, 11 years after its birth, a separate animation competition, also international, was organized for both professionals and independent artists. At this time, the name was also changed to Etiuda&Anima. Since that time, an exceptional prize has been awarded – the Special Golden Dinosaur – for a distinguished artist who skillfully links his or her own artistic activity with pedagogical work. Its previous winners have been: Jerzy Kucia from Kraków’s Academy of Fine Arts; Kazimierz Karabasz from the £ód¼ film school; Paul Driessen, a longtime lecturer at the Kunsthochschule in Kassel, Germany; and Wojciech Marczewski, the founder of Warsaw’s Andrzej Wajda Master School of Film Directing. At the most recent edition, the statuette was received by artist and pedagogue Mohsen Makhmalbaf. Also honored was Prague’s FAMU [Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts]. Aside from competitions, also prepared are retrospectives of such animation artists as: Gerrit van Dijk, Konstantin Bronzit, Michael Pavlatov, Aleksander Korejwo; as well as profiles of composers: Zygmunt Konieczny, Jan Kanty Pawlu¶kiewicz, Marek Wilczyński and Normand Roger. Thus, E&A attracts not only cinemaniacs, but also music lovers. The festival as a whole will take place under the ‘zodiac sign’ of discussion of Polish animation in the eyes of the world’s critics.
