Pictures from various corners of the globe: Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. The Ale Kino! Films of the World festival has no equal when it comes to bringing Polish audiences closer to distant, exotic cinema (and the world). Through the medium of cinema it consistently attempts to present the most distant cultures, beliefs and traditions. In Kraków, in the fifth edition of this festival’s programme, we will be able to see around 20 feature films – the emphasis being on productions presented and appreciated at the world’s festival. The vast majority of exotic films have no chance of distribution in Polish cinemas or even being broadcast on television. This year the main event will be a film that triumphed at this year’s Berlinale, winner of the Golden Bear, as well as the FIPRESCI award – Milk of Sorrow by Peruvian director, Claudia Llosa. Other films having their Polish premiere during the festival include the Filipino Kinatay, directed by Brillante Mendoza (directors’ award at Cannes 2009), the winner of a Golden Leopard at this year’s Locarno festival, Xiaolu Guo’s She, a Chinese, and also the Iranian About Elly (dir. Asghar Farhadi) or the Japanese All Around Us (dir. Ryosuke Hashiguchi).
The festival venue – not any old place: the Pod Baranami Cinema has just been rated by the Europa Cinemas network, whose membership is made up of 1945 screens, as the best in terms of repertoire in Europe.
