Kraków will be returning to its musical roots. In the post-war period, it was the capital of Polish pianism – this was as much down to the distinguished teachers as the musicians themselves, winners of international piano competitions. The new festival is organised by the young generation of Polish pianists affiliated to Kraków's Academy of Music.
International Royal Cracow Piano Festival (9-18 October), is linked to the Chopin Year 2010 celebrations (160th Anniversary of the composer's death and 200th Anniversary of his birth) and besides this, marks the 200th Anniversary of Joseph Haydn's death. It will be inaugurated by a performance by Alexander Kobrin from Russia, who is amongst the foremost pianists of the young generation in the world (9 October).
The festival will brought to a close in the Kraków Philharmonic Hall by a performance by Mariangela Vacatello from Italy (18 October). The young Neapolitan will be performing F. Chopin's Rondo in E flat major Op. 16, F. Liszt's Sonata in B minor and J.S. Bach's “Italian” Concerto, as well as works by D. Shostakovich and I. Stravinsky. (bf)
