For the first time, the Summer Jazz Festival took place in 1996 as part of the 40th-birthday celebrations of the Piwnica pod Baranami. At the time, its creator, Witold Wnuk – inspired by Piotr Skrzynecki – presented an entire month’s series of daily concerts at the Piwnica.

Every year, the festival has expanded its format, presenting more and more extra concerts at the Kraków Philharmonic, Radio Kraków, theaters, clubs, galleries and hotels, as well as in the open air. The festival is comprised annually of about 50 concerts, at which nearly 200 Polish and foreign artists perform.
